Pompeii is the ancient Roman city that was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. with a thick layer of volcanic ash and pumice.  2,000 people died and the city was abandoned. It was rediscovered in 1748 surprisingly still mostly intact almost 2,000 years later.
