Silverton, CO

The true essence of a thriving small town.

Silverton is a small town located in southwestern Colorado, about 50 miles north of Durango. It is situated in the San Juan Mountains and is known for its beautiful natural scenery and historic charm. The town has a population of around 600 people and is surrounded by peaks that rise over 13,000 feet. Silverton was founded in the late 1800s as a mining town, and many of its original buildings have been preserved, giving the town a unique character. Today, Silverton is a popular tourist destination, offering outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and mountain biking, as well as cultural attractions.  Additionally, the town is home to several restaurants, shops, and art galleries.

Two spots I highly recommend for some grub when you are in town are Handlebars Food & Saloon or Avalanche Brewing Company.  (Avalanche also has great hats for sale if you are interested!)

In order to get to Silverton you would fly into Durango, CO. Durango is a city in southwestern Colorado, located near the New Mexico border. It has a tiny airport similar to flying in to Bend, OR if you have been there.  Durango is also a popular tourist destination, offering outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and mountain biking.  The city also has a vibrant downtown area with numerous shops, restaurants, and art galleries. We wandered around and checked out the town before heading over to Silverton for the weekend.

Driving out to Silverton is beautiful and the surrounding area is just stunning. Its perfect for finding a hike or biking some trails. We rented ATVs and went on a ride with some locals. They took us way out in the hills it was awesome!

Winters in Silverton can be quite cold and snowy, with temperatures often dropping well below freezing. The town is located at an elevation of over 9,000 feet, which means that it receives more snowfall than many other parts of Colorado. During the winter months, many of the outdoor activities that are popular in the summer, such as hiking and mountain biking, are not possible due to the snow. However, there are still plenty of things to do in Silverton during the winter. Skiing and snowboarding are popular activities at nearby ski resorts such as Kendall Mountain and Purgatory Resort. Additionally, visitors can enjoy snowshoeing, ice skating, and sledding in and around town. The winter months also bring a unique charm to Silverton, with holiday events and festive decorations throughout the town. I can’t wait to come back during a winter wonderland!
