Ocho Cascadas, an exclusive, open-air concept timeshare resort.
Puerto Vallarta has always had a way of pulling me back in, but this trip felt a little different. Instead of staying on the north side, we ventured to the south side and stayed at Ocho Cascadas, tucked into the hills overlooking the ocean. The views were undeniably beautiful — dramatic jungle cliffs, crashing waves below, and sunsets that painted the entire coastline gold each evening.
That being said, if I’m being completely honest, Ocho felt more suited for a honeymoon or couples retreat than the type of trip we were looking for. It was peaceful and secluded, but also very removed from everything. There wasn’t much within walking distance, no direct beach access, and no restaurant on site. The property itself was lovely, but the isolation became noticeable after a couple of days.
One thing I did really enjoy, though, was bringing a private chef in for dinner. We did that three nights during our stay, and those evenings ended up being some of my favorite moments of the trip — lingering dinners, fresh seafood, margaritas, and the sound of the ocean below us while the city lights twinkled in the distance.
When we did head into town, Puerto Vallarta reminded me exactly why people love it so much. We spent time wandering downtown, weaving through the cobblestone streets, stopping into little shops, people watching along the Malecón, and soaking in the energy that makes Vallarta feel both lively and relaxed at the same time.
The food, as always, was a highlight! Dinner at La Cappella was absolutely worth it for the atmosphere alone — candlelight, live violin music, and sweeping views over the city and the church. It felt romantic in that classic Puerto Vallarta way.
We also had an incredible evening at Cafe des Artistes, which somehow manages to feel elegant without being stuffy. Every course felt thoughtful and beautifully done.
For something more relaxed, we stopped at Karuma, this place just feels fun as you walk up. With the marry go round across the way. You hear the giggles of children as the lights come on the and the sun goes down. the grounds and view are stunning and the food and service is top level. La Palapa for Breakfast was a delightful surprise. the food was loved by all the beach setting is relaxed and the ocean breeze feels amazing. Nothing beats coffee with a view.
Visiting the Vallarta Botanical Gardens is worth the trip if you’re looking for something to do. The gardens were lush, peaceful, and honestly a perfect break from the heat and busyness of town. Walking through the tropical plants and jungle paths made the entire day feel slower and calmer in the best possible way. You can have lunch overlooking the jungle below and the gift shop is full of fabulous things to look at or purchase for someone at home.
Overall, this side of Puerto Vallarta gave me a different perspective on the area. While I probably wouldn’t stay at Ocho Cascadas again personally, I can absolutely see the appeal for couples wanting privacy and quiet. But the real magic for me still lives in the energy of Puerto Vallarta itself — the food, the people, and the music drifting through the streets at night.
