“Ua Mau Ke Ea O Ka Aina I Ka Pono” Translation: The Life of the Land is Perpetuated in Righteousness.
Maui is such magical place. You land there and immediately don’t worry about a thing. You just know every little thing is gunna be alright! The sense of peace and relaxing calm just sets in. No one is in a rush or angry in MAUI.
That’s probably why, Maui attracts millions of visitors each year who come to enjoy its natural beauty and outdoor activities such as surfing, snorkeling, hiking, and whale watching. It is known for its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and diverse marine life. There is so much to do in Maui. I highly suggest you rent a car. You will want to explore all parts of this paradise island and a car is the easiest way to get around. There are tons of places to stay in Maui all over the island. I would say the most popular area to stay in Maui depends on your preferences and what you want to do during your visit. Here are a few options:
1. Lahaina: This historic town on the west coast of Maui is known for its lively atmosphere, great restaurants, and shopping. It’s also a popular spot for whale watching tours and sunset cruises.
2. Kihei: Located on the south coast of Maui, Kihei is known for its beautiful beaches and laid-back vibe. It’s a great place to stay if you’re looking for a more affordable option that’s still close to all the action.
3. Wailea: This upscale resort area on the south coast of Maui is known for its luxurious hotels, world-class golf courses, and beautiful beaches. It’s a great place to stay if you’re looking for a more exclusive experience.
4. Paia: This charming town on the north shore of Maui is known for its bohemian vibe, great restaurants, and boutique shops. It’s a great place to stay if you’re looking for a more relaxed atmosphere away from the crowds.
My personal favorite is Kaanapali, just north of Lahaina. It has number of hotels and time shares in the area. Black Rock is there. It is named after the large black lava rock that juts out into the ocean and is a prominent landmark in the area. The rock is also known for its cliff jumping, which is a popular activity for thrill-seekers.
As for things to do in Maui here are some top recommendations.
1. Visit Haleakala National Park: This park is home to the dormant Haleakala volcano, which offers stunning views of the sunrise and sunset. You can also go hiking, camping, and stargazing in the park. We did a Downhill Self Guided Bike Tour with Mountain Riders. I liked it because you go up early to see the sunrise from the volcano and then get your body moving for the day. Plus you can stop and go as you please and explore the surrounding area.
2. Go snorkeling or scuba diving: Maui has some of the best snorkeling and diving spots in the world, including Molokini Crater and Honolua Bay. This is my favorite thing to do when visiting any of the islands. If you have never tried it and are not certified there are day classes you can take. I highly recommend, it truly is a whole other world under the sea. You can also do a snorkel cruise, there are any number of them throughout the day. We often go with Hula Girl.
3. Take a road trip on the Road to Hana: This scenic drive takes you through lush rainforests, past waterfalls and beaches, and offers stunning views of the coastline. Best to go in your own vehicle so you can stop and go as you please. This will take a full day.
4. Attend a luau: A traditional Hawaiian feast that includes music, dance, and cultural performances. Most places you stay have a Luau of some sort. If you are looking for a free show you can go into Betty’s Beach Cafe around sunset and some nights there is a luau that goes on the beach right in front of it.
5. Go whale watching: Maui is one of the best places in the world to see humpback whales during their annual migration from Alaska.
6. Visit Lahaina: This historic town on the west coast of Maui is known for its lively atmosphere, great restaurants, and shopping.
7. Relax on the beach: Maui has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, including Kaanapali Beach and Wailea Beach.
8. Go Ziplining: Maui has a number of companies that offer this experience. It’s a fun and exciting way to experience Maui’s natural beauty and get your adrenaline pumping!
9. Golfing: Maui has 14 golf courses (several of which are ranked at or near the top of the “world’s best” lists)

Miso Phat Sushi – The restaurant is known for its fresh and creative sushi rolls, as well as its friendly and laid-back atmosphere. Sushi here is amazing. Often there is a wait so you may want to be prepared for that. It’s a small restaurant but so so so very good.
Monkeypod Kitchen – Located right in Whaler Village, this restaurant is known for its farm-to-table cuisine, craft cocktails, and lively atmosphere. Usually pretty busy so go shop while you wait.
Star Noodle – Located in Lahaina, delicious innovative food on the waterfront. Fabulous for Lunch or Dinner.
Sea House Restaurant – Fantastic place to have breakfast. Located in the Napili Kai Beach Resort. Stunning views of the beach and ocean.
Hula Grill Kaanapali – Located right in front of Monkeypod. This restaurant has a great outdoor bar and the BEST Lime ‘n Coconut Cocktails you will ever have. MY FAVORITE! We will go down and get one of these as our dessert, night caps!
Maui is definitely a place you will come back to time and time again. Especially if you live on the West Coast. It is such a quick fight to get to pure paradise and southwest has deals going there all the time. I hope you enjoy!
