“Hawaii is pretty spectacular no matter what island you are on but O’ahu has some very special things to offer.” – ME
Oahu is the most populated and third-largest of the Hawaiian Islands. Known as “The Gathering Place,” Oahu is home to the largest population of people as well as the best nightlife in Hawaii. The island is an enticing blend of cosmopolitan culture and natural beauty, with untouched tropical landscapes as well as a stimulating urban vibe. You can explore the beaches and gentle waves, and then experience the big-city atmosphere in Honolulu. This place has tons of beautiful beaches while still boasting the modernity of a thriving city, unlike some of the quieter islands.
I have visited this island a few times and always finding more to do. From history, culture, food, and beaches there something for everyone. This was a quick trip but still we packed it full of fun.
Great Attractions!
Polynesian Cultural Center – Explore the Polynesian Cultural Center to learn about the cultures of Hawaii and other Pacific Island nations. If you have never been this place is very cool. Also it is worth money to get the guided tour because there are so many shows and this way you get a great seat and are arriving at the best time for each show.
Pearl Harbor – At the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, learn about one of the most pivotal moments in US history: the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the subsequent entry of the United States into World War II. Really great to check out at least once in your life.
Diamond Head – Diamond Head (Lē‘ahi) sits prominently near the eastern edge of Waikiki’s coastline. Hawaii’s most recognized landmark is known for its historic hiking trail, stunning coastal views, and military history. Open Daily 6am-6pm, there is a entry parking fee of $10.00. Great little hike to the summit less then a mile up. It can get steep at parts though. My 9 year old niece did it no problem.
Hawaii Yacht Club – If you are part the yachting/sailing community, the Hawaii Yacht Club (HYC) is a historic club established in 1901 and is among the oldest and most prestigious clubs in Hawaii. The Club is located within the Ala Wai Harbor at the edge of Waikiki on the Island of Oahu. Check hours and events they can change without warning.
Kualoa Ranch – A private nature reserve that has been the scene for many Hollywood movies and TV shows. You can take a tour of the ranch, which has been the filming location for Jurassic Park, Lost, and other productions. The ranch offers a variety of activates for all ages and is just beautiful. Be sure to purchase tickets in advance as they do sell out.
He’eia State Park – Oceanside tropical park with mountains & scenic vistas, plus canoe building classes & tours.
Swim with Dolphins – Experience an unforgettable opportunity to swim & play with dolphins in Oahu. This seemed more like a meet the dolphins while in the water with them then an actual swim with them adventure. However it is memorable!
High end shopping – Hawaii is known for its high end shopping. As they don’t charge a sales taxes patrons can purchase high value goods at a much lower price then on the main land. If you walk down Kalakaua Ave you will find a number of high end establishments for all your shopping needs and wants.
Like all the islands O’ahu offers all your normal outdoor fun like UTV, horseback, zipline, intimate waterfall hike, surfing, snorkeling, diving and more. I recommend spending at least four days here, with 5-7 days being ideal to maximize your experience on the island. This will give you enough time to visit all famous attractions while allowing some downtime at the beach or spa.
As for accommodations both times I have visited I have stayed in Honolulu right near or on Fort DeRussy Beach. There are numerous lovely spots in that area or all over the island you can stay at.
