During our Europe travels we decided to road trip around Scotland. We had 5 days to take in this incredible country and that wasn’t nearly enough time.
Inverness
We arrived in Inverness pretty late in the evening. Driving there took a bit longer then we expected due to traffic. (About 4 Hours) However, a stunning castle awaited us with the sweetest staff. We stayed at the Kincraig Castle Hotel. Kincraig Castle, was built post the Battle of Culloden in 1746 as a secure base for King George II’s army. Since the 17th century, Kincraig Castle has been home to generations of the Mackenzie Clan and it’s now an award-winning 4-star country house hotel.
Inverness is a charming city located in the Scottish Highlands and is known as the capital of this region. Despite being the largest city in the Highlands, it’s compact enough to explore on foot and boasts a variety of attractions. After a wonderful night of mingling with a varity of other guests and exchanging travel adventures over drinks. We got up and headed out to explore Loch Ness find Nessie and check out Urquhart Castle. Urquhart Castle is a large, ruined castle dating from 1509, overlooking Loch Ness.
Driving through Scotland is stunning. There are areas of farmland, greenland, and also very rugged Iceland looking areas and all will take your breath away. Plus the lighting there just always seems to be perfect. You will see sheep and cows all over the place and while your in the highland area if you keep on the look out you will defiantly come across a Highland Coo or two! We were lucky enough to find a number of them and even feed them. They were all so cute, I really wanted to take one home! We also found this tiny little café where we stopped for lunch. This place held maybe 10 people but the food was some of the best we had on our entire trip.
We were headed to Isle of Skye another 4 hours on the road from Inverness. We passed by the Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks and a symbol of the country’s rich history. Strategically located on its own small island, it overlooks the Isle of Skye, where three great sea-lochs meet, and is surrounded by majestic landscapes.
