Where there is more to do then you thought!
Tulsa is the second largest city in the state of Oklahoma, it is located just Northwest of Oklahoma City. One common misconception about Tulsa is that it’s a small, sleepy town with not much to offer. In reality, Tulsa is a vibrant and growing city with a diverse economy, a thriving arts and culture scene, and plenty of things to see and do. This city is also much prettier then I expected, in the spring especially. Everything is beautiful and green, flowers everywhere. Peoples gardens are just breathtaking. And don’t worry too much about tornados in Tulsa. They seem to be just a bit too North for tornado alley, thankfully!
After visiting Tulsa a number of times. I have found some really great things to check out if you visit. There is hunting and fishing, farmers markets, city life if you are more drawn to that. Some top things we enjoyed are listed below:
- Quik Trip – Quik Trip the the local Quick Mart, 7/11, gas station but this place is on steroids’ they have everything snack and beverage wise you could ever want. Our family joke is we call it Long Trip because the kids take forever and day in there. There are some Quik Trips in multiple states. However, California does not have these so I was unfamiliar with them.
2. The Pioneer Woman Mercantile – This is just about and hour from Tulsa in Pawhuska, OK. Nice drive through rolling little hills. Cute very small town that has started to revive a bit thanks to Ree Drummond’s enterprise. The Mercantile consists of a restaurant, bakery and store. All full of wonderful things, you wont leave empty handed.
3. Endangered Ark Foundation – This Elephant organization located in Hugo, Oklahoma, (2.5 hours south of Tulsa) is dedicated to the preservation and protection of Asian elephants. The foundation’s primary focus is on rescuing and caring for elephants that have been retired from circuses or other forms of entertainment. The elephants are provided with a spacious and natural environment where they can roam freely and receive proper care and attention from experienced handlers. They also works to educate the public about the importance of elephant conservation. They offer tours of their facility, which allow visitors to see the elephants up close and learn about their behavior, biology, and habitat.
4. Horseback riding – We went with a company that meets you in various locations and sets you up with everything. Lakeside Trail Ride LLC they were great! Our guides and their horses were perfect for what we were looking for. We will defiantly use them again and can’t wait to see more locations in different season.
5. The Gathering Place – One of the largest parks in the United States. It covers over 66 acres and features a variety of attractions and amenities for visitors of all ages. The park was designed to be a place where people could come together to enjoy nature, play, and connect with one another. It features multiple playgrounds, splash pads, sports courts, and gardens, as well as several restaurants and cafes. This place is awesome, perfect to get some energy out and be outside in the fresh air. The Gathering Place is a beautiful and innovative park that has quickly become a beloved destination for both locals and visitors to Tulsa.
As for restaurant recommendations.
Tulsa is defiantly not a San Diego or Phoenix foodie place. However, we have found some pretty good spots.
- Nola’s – A speakeasy vibe with a moody décor, good food and fun cocktails. Large bar and Patio seating with live music at times.
- Waterfront Grill – Lovely restaurant with a view of the river. Food was ok but the service is kind and professional.
- The Brook Restaurant & Bar – This place has a nice large patio with view of surrounding area. They are pet friendly which is nice. Two things you must try while here is the Lavender Basil Cocktail and the Mac and Cheese. I’m not even kidding it was the best Mac we have ever had!
- RibCrib BBQ – Local chain in the area. But has really good ribs and salads. Sometimes what else do you need?
- Pinkeasy Sips & Sweets – Adorable sweet shop with boba tea, ice cream parlor and tea house. Located just next door to Nola’s. So cute and charming with a number of sweet treats to choose from.
